Tutorial Description:

Learn how to increase an objects speed. In this tutorial, we take a slowly riding bicyle, and make it look like it’s zooming past cars; Take a look.

This is the finished product from this tutorial, a picture of a bike running at speed!

Final product

I’m going to show step by step how to do it. First, open your picture, I used this one:

Now, select the woman and the bicycle, using the magic wand tool (W). After this, use the quick mask mode (Q) to fix your selection.

Above there is a picture of the bike on the quick mask mode.

After getting the bike and lady selections (press Q to leave the quick mask mode and then go to select > inverse), copy the ladys+bike image (ctrl+c with their selection appearing, and then ctrl+v). Call this new layer “lady and bike”.

Now let’s add some blur. On the background layer, go to Filter > Blur > Motion blur. The amount of “distance” you put on the settings is the amount of speed the lady is running, nice huh?

The effect is almost done, now if you want a more realistic image, using the same procedure we used previously (wand tool + quick mask mode to fix), get the selection of the wheels.

Add a radial blur to it (Filter > Blur > Radial Blur)

And we are done!

Hover over to see “before” image.
